    Why a Natural Oil Finish?

    The natural oil process offers a warm and beautiful satin/matte sheen that cannot be achieved with modern day acrylic or polyurethane coatings. The naturally rich patina is only enhanced with age and use - the more it is walked or played on, the more beautiful it gets creating healthy, durable, natural floor for your family. The natural oils penetrate the the wood and become part of the floor allowing for rejuvenation and maintenance without a complete refinishing. The surface film of acrylic and polyurethane finishes detract from the natural beauty of the wood and degrade your flooring material after each refinishing, while never looking quite good enough between refinishes.

    Our natural wood floors feature a distinctive and sophisticated range of distressed, sculpted, and antiqued visuals at prices that are unbeatable. Our floors are meticulously crafted to ensure lasting beauty for generations to come, truly a solid investment. Our quality wood floors feature a solid oak hardwood top layer which allows for the same amount of sanding as a solid 3/4" wood floor, that is if you ever need to sand them. Keep in mind, refinishing is rare if ever needed with the maintenance features of a natural oil finish. The top layer rests on a multi-layered, dimensionally stable core giving our floors the strength to withstand decades of use.

    The Natural Oil Finish Difference

    Our natural oil finish is incomparable with today’s more popular acrylic, polyurethane, and aluminum oxide top coat finishes. These types of finishes protect the floor by forming a top coat wear layer, in effect, a plastic film on the surface of the floor. Like any top coat polyurethane finish they will scratch and get dull over time and cannot be spot repaired, only sanded off and reapplied. A costly recoating of the entire floor is necessary causing you the hassle of furniture moving, staying off of your floors, dust and not to mention the high cost.

    An oil finish is designed to penetrate the wood fibers to harden them while not altering the naturally beautiful grain of the wood. Lacking plastic visual film on the surface, oiled floors are distinguishable by their elegant patina and natural beauty. Our natural oil floors are easy to care for and are repairable. Our oiled floors never need to be sanded - only regular applications of maintenance oil is necessary to nourish the wood and bring the beautiful finish back.

    Zero VOC vs. Low VOC

    Rejuvenating roughly 325 sq. ft. of our natural wood flooring will require approx. 1/5 of a liter of Woca Refresher maintenance oil, emitting Zero VOC's and eliminating that harsh chemical scent from your home. A typical polyurethane wood floor requires three gallons of finish - one gallon of the sealer coat and two more gallons for the topcoat.

    VOCs from polyurethane coating evaporate into your home at the rate of about 4 lbs. per gallon, meaning that 3 gallons of polyurethane equals approx. 12 pounds of VOCs floating around in your home. This chemical exposure becomes even more significant for children as there immune systems have not fully developed yet.

    Natural Oil vs. Polyurethane

    Our natural oil finish is time tested and has been used to finish wood floors for hundreds of years. Our natural oil finishes are made with linseed oils, an old standby for finishing wood. Today's standard of the polyurethane finish was developed about 50 years ago. It's only real purpose is to create a high sheen clear coat finish, designed to wear and be refinished.

    Polyurethane is a form of plastic derived from petroleum, a flammable liquid and fossil fuel. It is often used in chemical energy sources and has created a major impact on our environment and health. Popularly known uses such as gasoline and diesel, help make evident the toxicity of a polyurethane and its distinct "chemical" scent with high VOC content.

    Penetrating Oil vs. Plastic Surface Coating

    The natural oil finish on our floors is not a toxic plastic surface topcoat, but is designed work with the natural beauty of the wood by penetrating, bonding with, and hardening the fibers of wood.

    When wood is finished with our natural oil, it may dent or scratch, but it can easily be repaired and rejuvenated. Rejuvenating our natural oil floors is easy, first, lightly sand the desired area of the floor. Then apply a coat of Woca Refresher maintenance oil. Treating the entire floor is not necessary, only the areas needing maintenance.

    For typical maintenance, only spot sanding on extreme wear marks and scratches is necessary. A total wall-to-wall sanding is normally avoided if regular maintenance of the oil finish is performed.

    Repairing a topcoat floor coated with polyurethane or aluminum oxide is a much more expensive, laborious and disruptive process. Polyurethane is a plastic coating that sits on top of the wood, and acts as surface coating. The purpose of a surface coating is to protect the wood from wear of the expensive wood material.

    However, a polyurethane floor will never look any better then the day of the final finish application. Immediately, plastic topcoat finishes begin picking up small and large scratches, which are abrasions that defuse the light and pick up dirt, quickly becoming visible and appearing dingy.

    The life of a polyurethane floor is not over because it is worn out and the finish material is gone, it just becomes dingy and ugly. This process is even more evident when the floor has damage from scratches that penetrate the surface coating and expose wood. (NOTE: all wood can dent and scratch no matter what coating is used).

    Plastic coated polyurethane floors must be maintained by sanding again and again, which is an expensive, disruptive, messy and often toxic process.

    The only re-coating option for plastic top coat finishes is to re-coat the entire floor.

    When is it time to Refinish a plastic coating? Really, as soon as you have a scratch or a scar that penetrates the surface coating, or when the floor looks dirty after you clean the floor. This “dirty” look means there is an abundance of surface scratches holding dirt and showing wear and tear. Most people wait to do a maintenance coat to long resulting in wear of the wood, which is where the true value lies.

    Living with Scratches vs Living On Natural Oil

    The vast majority of polyurethane customers live on their floors until they can't stand the dingy look anymore. They attempt to take off their shoes at the door, minimize wear and tear, put floor protectors under all furniture, which are all great ideas no matter what finish. Most people expect that a polyurethane floor is maintenance free.

    Homeowners with our natural oil floors live with their beautiful floors. They seem to understand that wood expands and contracts and is a natural living material with the seasons. Feeding wood natural oils supports the notion that you are living with your wood floor and our natural wood responds to the appropriate care that’s given. This results in a floor that is durable, easy to maintain and is healthy for your family.

    Repairability vs. Durability

    Wood is a very durable material even without a finish. Our natural oils enhance the durable nature of wood and allow the floor to be easily repaired if damaged and maintained as inevitable wear and tear occurs.

    While polyurethanes provide a durable plastic barrier, this barrier also consumes a layer of wood each and every time it is applied, sanded and refinished. At best there are three to four sandings in a floor’s life and then the floor must be replaced and typically ends up in a landfill. Over time, repairability is a more important feature than durability, as even the hardest of materials scratch, such as concrete.

  • Why would I choose FSC* engineered wood over solid wood?

    • FSC engineered wood is more eco friendly because less of the tree is used to make the visual surface of the floor.
    • A layered system performs better in a dry climate, or a climate with wide temperature variances and humidity changes throughout the day. The layered floor is able to move with the fluxuations instead of only moving in one direction, which may cause cupping or pulling apart at connection points.
    • An 1/8” wear layer is typically able to be refinished twice, which is also typical of a solid wood floor. Engineered floors can be glued down, nailed down, or floated.
    • Engineered floors can be used over radiant head. They work especially well over hydronic heat.
    • A properly maintained engineered wood floor will last a lifetime….or two.
