Shaw Empire 12x24 Concrete and Stone-Look Ceramic Tile

Shaw Empire 12x24 (style CS75Q) is a nominal 12" x 24" glazed ceramic floor and wall tile (actual 11.8" x 23.62") with a soft, low-contrast stone and concrete look, available in Cream 00100 and Surf 00500. The rectangular format puts far fewer grout joints on the floor than the matching Empire mosaic, which keeps the calm, cement-like surface from looking busy. Shaw lists a break strength of 412 lbf or more and a glaze hardness of 8, while its high (V3) shade variation stops a big floor from looking printed.

Best for: Kitchen floors, open living and dining areas, bathroom floors and walls, hallways, laundry rooms, shower walls.

Colors

  • Cream 00100: a warm off-white with faint, low-contrast clouding that brightens a room without the starkness of pure white.
  • Surf 00500: a pale, cool gray with the even, quiet character of smooth troweled concrete, well suited to modern and minimalist rooms.

Why Choose Empire 12x24

  • 11.8" x 23.62" rectangle with fewer grout lines than small squares
  • Break strength of 412 lbf or more
  • Rated 0.42 or higher for wet CoF in kitchens and baths
  • Mohs glaze hardness rating of 8
  • High (V3) shade variation for natural movement tile to tile
  • 0.335" thick, packed 19.38 sq ft to the box

Where to Install

Shaw rates Empire 12x24 for floors, so it handles indoor floors and walls equally well: kitchens, dining and living areas, bathrooms, hallways, laundry rooms and finished basements, plus shower and tub walls. It has no frost rating, so plan it for indoor rooms only. In running bond, shifting each row by a third of the tile or less helps control lippage; start from a flat, well-prepared subfloor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shaw Empire tile concrete-look or stone-look? Shaw Empire sits between the two: its glazed surface has soft, low-contrast mottling that reads like smooth concrete in Surf 00500 and like a pale, quiet stone in Cream 00100.

Will Empire 12x24 tiles vary in color? Yes, somewhat. Empire 12x24 carries a high (V3) shade variation rating, so expect visible tone shifts between tiles; pull from several boxes as you set them so the variation spreads evenly across the floor.

Is 12x24 ceramic tile good for a small bathroom? Yes. A 12x24 tile such as Shaw Empire can make a small bathroom feel larger because there are fewer grout lines, and its wet CoF of 0.42 or higher suits a bath floor. Plan the layout so you avoid thin slivers at the walls and around the toilet.

What is the Empire mosaic used for? The Empire Mosaic (CS99Q) is a 12.99" sheet in the same Cream and Surf colors, sold as an accent tile for walls. It pairs with an Empire 12x24 floor as a shower wall feature, niche back or backsplash.

What grout goes with Empire Surf and Cream? For Shaw Empire Surf 00500, a light gray grout keeps the floor reading as one smooth, concrete-like surface; for Empire Cream 00100, use a warm off-white or bone grout. Keep the joint narrow so the large 12x24 faces stay the focus.

Design Pairing Guide

Cream 00100 pairs with light oak or walnut cabinetry, aged brass hardware, and warm white or mushroom-colored walls, finished with a bone grout. Surf 00500 suits flat-panel white or charcoal cabinets, brushed stainless or matte black fixtures, and cool white or pale blue-gray paint, with a mid-gray grout for low contrast. Either color gives a neutral base for a patterned rug, bold art or a deep green island.
