Shaw Tempest 8x8 Terracotta & Concrete-Look Porcelain Tile

Shaw Tempest 8x8 (style 673TS) is a small 7.87" x 7.87" glazed porcelain square with the look of clay terracotta and concrete. The compact format brings back the scale of traditional quarry and cotto tile, and its extra grout joints help it follow the slope of a shower floor or a pitched porch while adding grip underfoot. Small squares also adapt well to powder rooms, hallways and backsplashes where large tiles would need awkward cuts. Shaw rates the series frost resistant, the body is impervious, and high (V3) shade variation keeps the floor lively.

Best for: Shower floors, powder rooms, small baths, backsplashes, hallways, porch floors and garden paths.

Colors

  • Taupe 00200: a quiet taupe that gives a small powder room warmth without crowding it.
  • Concrete 00500: a light gray square that looks clean and modern in a compact shower.
  • Clay 00600: pale terracotta with a peach blush, a nod to classic cotto floors.
  • Rust 00800: a deep red clay that turns a hallway or back porch into a focal point.
  • Charcoal 00900: dark charcoal that frames a small bath and contrasts with white walls.

Why Choose Tempest 8x8

  • Small 7.87" squares suit shower floors and sloped areas
  • More grout joints for added traction on small floors
  • Wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher
  • Impervious glazed porcelain (0.50% or less absorption)
  • Frost resistant for porches and outdoor steps
  • 11.19 sq ft per box

Where to Install

Tempest 8x8 is a floor tile that also works on walls. Small squares are a good match for shower floors, bathrooms, powder rooms, entries and backsplashes, and the frost rating means they can continue outside to a porch, stoop or garden path in cold climates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tempest 8x8 be used on a shower floor? Yes. Tempest 8x8 is a small floor-rated porcelain square, and small tiles follow the slope to a shower drain better than large formats; the many grout joints also add underfoot grip.

Is Tempest 8x8 a good alternative to real terracotta tile? Tempest 8x8 gives the scale and clay colors of traditional terracotta squares in glazed porcelain, which skips the routine sealing unglazed clay demands; only the grout should be sealed.

What is the difference between Tempest 8x8 and Tempest 16x16? The Tempest 16x16 covers larger rooms with a quarter as many tiles and fewer joints, while Tempest 8x8 suits small rooms, showers and patterned borders. Both come in the same five colors.

Can I make a checkerboard with Tempest 8x8? Yes. Alternating two Tempest 8x8 colors, such as Concrete and Charcoal or Clay and Rust, creates a checkerboard floor; the high shade variation makes the pattern look softer than a printed check.

Is there a slip-resistant Tempest 8x8? Yes. Shaw also makes the Tempest Slip-Resistant 8x8 (677TS) in the same size and colors as Tempest 8x8; it is the version to choose for exterior steps, pool areas and other surfaces that stay wet.

Design Pairing Guide

In a powder room, Taupe pairs with a walnut vanity, cream walls and antique brass. Concrete suits a white floating vanity, chrome taps and pale gray grout. Clay looks good with sage green walls, a farmhouse basin and unlacquered brass. Rust brings warmth to a back hall with deep gray paint, iron hooks and buff grout. A Charcoal and Concrete checkerboard looks sharp with white plaster walls and polished nickel.
