Shaw Universe 22x22 Matte Calacatta Marble-Look Ceramic Tile

Shaw Universe 22x22, style 478TS, is a matte glazed ceramic floor tile with a Calacatta-inspired white marble look, sized nominal 22" x 22" (actual 21.54" x 21.54"). Where the 12x24 has a smooth face, this larger square has a matte finish that softens glare and gives white marble a quieter, honed-stone feel on a floor. It is also the only Universe size offered in two colors: bold-veined Calacatta and the more restrained Marquant. The broad square keeps grout lines spaced out, helping open-plan kitchens and entries look larger.

Best for: Kitchen floors, living and dining rooms, foyers, bathroom floors, hallways and large interior feature walls.

Colors

• Calacatta 00120: crisp white field with strong, dramatic gray veins for a statement floor.
• Marquant 00121: white background with thin, sparse gray lines for a calmer, mostly white surface.

Why Choose Universe 22x22

• Nominal 22" x 22" squares (21.54" actual) for wide spacing between grout joints
• Matte glazed ceramic with a honed-marble feel and wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher
• Two marble colorways, from heavy to light veining
• Break strength of 250 lbf or greater at 0.346" thick
• High (V3) shade variation for natural-looking stone movement
• Packed at 16.04 sq ft to the box

Where to Install

With a Shaw floor rating, Universe 22x22 can be installed on interior floors and walls: kitchens, great rooms, entries, hallways, bathroom floors and accent walls. No frost rating is listed, so it is an indoor tile and not for patios or unheated porches. Large squares need a flat substrate; a leveling system and full mortar coverage help keep edges even.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Universe Calacatta and Marquant? In Shaw Universe 22x22, Calacatta 00120 has bold, prominent gray veining, while Marquant 00121 is mostly white with fine, sparse gray lines. Choose Calacatta for drama and Marquant for a quieter white floor.

Is matte marble-look tile good for kitchen floors? The matte surface of Shaw Universe 22x22 is rated at a wet DCOF of 0.42 or above and cuts glare and visible smudges compared with polished tile, which makes it a sensible choice for interior kitchen floors.

Is 22x22 tile hard to install? Shaw Universe 22x22 is a large-format square, so it needs a flat subfloor, a large-notch trowel with back-buttering, and ideally a leveling clip system. Experienced DIYers can manage it, but many homeowners hire a pro for big squares.

How does Universe 22x22 compare to the Universe Mosaic? Shaw Universe 22x22 is a floor-rated field tile, while Universe Mosaic is an accent sheet in Calacatta meant for backsplashes, niches and wall details. Use the 22x22 on the floor and the mosaic on nearby walls to tie a room together.

Can Universe 22x22 be used on a patio? No. Shaw Universe 22x22 has no frost rating, so it is meant for interior floors and walls only; pick a tile rated for freeze-thaw exposure outdoors.

Design Pairing Guide

Calacatta pairs well with dark walnut or espresso cabinets, aged brass hardware and white walls, grouted in light gray to echo the veins. Marquant suits all-white or pale oak kitchens with brushed nickel and soft greige walls; a white grout keeps the floor nearly seamless. Either color sits well with black window frames and iron light fixtures for contrast.
